Prejudices about the Arctic

The Arctic has been in the international limelight due to climate change. The whole world is concerned about melting ice and the prospect of losing the Arctic. At the same time, Arctic natural resources and ways to explore and exploit them are receiving a lot of attention. Geopolitical interests of Arctic and non-Arctic nations pave the way for Arctic development. What is missing from the picture is the human dimension of Arctic development. In her talk, Alexandra will discuss popular beliefs and prejudices about the Arctic shaped by global media and geopolitical forces. Human dimension concerns challenges and opportunities people face in the Arctic. The inclusion of human dimension dissolves preconceived ideas about the Arctic and shows how the Arctic can serve as an emerging model for sustainable development worldwide. Alexandra Middleton is Assistant Professor in Financial Accounting at Oulu Business School. Alexandra’s research focuses on tax transparency, sustainable business development, human capital and innovations in the Arctic. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
