Harvard students study Urban transformation of the Arctic city Kiruna

Press release from the Luleå University of Technology

History professor Dag Avango, at Luleå University of Technology, is responsible for an international digital workshop: “What does it take to move a city?” It is held for master’s students in collaboration with Harvard Research University in Cambridge, on the theme of sustainable development in the Arctic.

-– An issue we will discuss is how to meet sustainability goals in the Arctic when many people use the same land for different purposes, with a focus on Kiruna relocation, Dag Avango, says.

About 25 master’s students at Luleå University of Technology and Harvard will collaborate in October in a workshop on the Arctic that spans the subjects, economics, architecture, civil engineering, history and law.

The initiative for the workshop comes from Harvard. The students from Luleå University of Technology and Harvard, respectively, discuss together in groups about the challenges that an increased interest in natural resource extraction entails in the Arctic, with the social transformation in Kiruna as a case study. The students will be able to portray different actors who are influenced by Kiruna relocation in different ways and present their discussions to a panel consisting of teachers from Harvard, representatives from Kiruna municipality, LKAB, Dag Avango, Jennie Sjöholm, Senior Lecturer at Luleå University of Technology and residents from Kiruna with good insight into urban relocation and the consequences for private individuals.

–  My hope is that we´ll soon be able to have this workshop on site in Kiruna again in collaboration with Harvard, when the pandemic is over, Dag Avango, says.
